Men's Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision To Harvard

NEWTON, Mass. - Sophomore midfielder Edvin Worley nearly tied the game at one goal apiece in the 38th minute with a right-footed blast off the near post, but Harvard countered - and doubled - its lead 44 seconds before halftime and maintained its advantage through the second half as Boston College fell to the visiting Crimson 2-0 before a Labor Day crowd of 1,143 fans at the Newton Campus Complex.
Harvard freshman Scott Prozeller scored the first goal - at 21:29 - and sophomore Jamie Rees increased the visitor's lead to two goals at 44:16. Senior forward Andre Akpan assisted on both goals.
BC (1-2-0) totaled a 17-14 shot advantage in the game, including a 9-6 edge in the game's first 45 minutes. Harvard earned a 7-2 edge in the shots on goal category as well as a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
In addition to Worley's 28-yard missile off the post, freshman Charlie Rugg nearly halved the visitor's lead in the 69th minute with a one-time shot that missed wide. Less than two minutes later, fellow freshman Isaac Taylor attempted a shot from the inside the 18-yard circle that missed wide right.
Freshman goalkeeper Justin Luthy registered five saves in the losing effort, including a stop of Brian Rogers' breakaway chance in the 55th minute.
Harvard sophomore goalie Austin Harms recorded two saves. The Crimson improve to their record to 2-0-0 this season.
Game Notes: Boston College and Harvard played for the first time since Sept. 26, 2001 - a 3-2 home win for the Eagles ... Taylor and sophomore Patrick Chin each attempted three shots in the match ... Next, BC will play at Maryland on Friday, Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. That game will mark the Atlantic Coast Conference season opener.
