CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore Mickey Wiswall hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first and the Boston College baseball team never looked back as six different pitchers shut out Rhode Island, 10-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
BC's pitching gave up just four hits on the day and after the first inning, allowed just one runner to reach second base. Sophomore Dave Laufer picked up the win after working 3.0 innings and allowing one hit.
Wiswall ended the day 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs. His homer was the fifth on the season. Junior Robbie Anston and sophomores Matt Hamlet and Garret Smith all had two hits on the day with Anston and Smith both hitting a double. Both of them crossed the plate twice while Smith added an RBI. Freshman Brad Zapenas had a career-high three RBI on the day.
After getting out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the first inning, the Eagles put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom half. With one out, Hamlet singled up the middle and then Wiswall blasted a 3-1 offering over the wall in right to put the Eagles up 2-0.
BC added another run in the second inning. Smith fought off a 1-2 pitch and dropped it in right field for a single and with one out, senior Harry Darling snuck a hit through the right side of the infield to put runners on the corners. Zapenas drove Smith home, taking the first pitch he saw deep to center for a sac fly to make it 3-0 Eagles.
In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Mike Sudol doubled to leadoff the frame and Darling sacrificed him over to third. Zapenas took the next pitch and grounded out to short, scoring Sudol to push the lead to 4-0.
BC put up five runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach. With one out, Wiswall walked and then junior Mike Belfiore lined one at the third baseman who mishandled it. Junior Barry Butera then singled through the right side for a run and Smith doubled to the gap in right for another to put BC up 6-0.
Sudol was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then Darling reached when the third baseman threw the ball away trying to go home to get the force. Two runs scored on the play to make it 8-0 and then Zapenas drove in the ninth run with a groundout.
BC tacked on another run in the sixth inning. Hamlet led off and singled to right and got himself to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball. Belfiore then cashed in the run with a grounder to short.
Jeff Cammans was the only player on Rhode Island (17-12-1) to get multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Eagles (20-11) will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. this weekend for a three-game ACC Atlantic Division series. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m.
