The Boston College softball team (18-28, 3-12 ACC) scored a decisive 10-2 victory in six innings over Dartmouth, tying a season-high with 12 hits on the afternoon.
Amy Tunstall led the Eagles on offense, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs in support of Allison Gage (7-11) and Morgan Kidd. Gage pitched four innings for the win, allowing five hits and one unearned run, while Kidd pitched the final two innings, allowing one earned run on two hits, a walk, and two strikeouts.
The Eagles got things going early, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Brittany Wilkins was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, and two batters later, Dani Weir reached on an error to put runners on first and third base with one out. Tunstall then recorded her first RBI of the day on a single to centerfield, scoring Wilkins from third base. Blair Destito followed with a single just inside the right field line to drive home Weir.
Dartmouth cut the BC lead to 2-1 with an unearned run in the top of the third inning, and threatened for more with runners on second and third and two outs. But Gage induced a groundout with a full count on the next batter, escaping the inning without any further damage.
BC tacked on five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, batting around in the frame to break the game open. Alison Kooistra led off the inning with a single, and the next batter, Taylor Peyton, reached on a bunt single. After a sacrifice bunt by Carolyn Jones moved both runners into scoring position, Gemma Ypparila hit a single to left field to drive in Kooistra. A bobble by the centerfielder allowed Peyton to score on the play, and Ypparila to move to second base, with the Eagles holding a 4-1 lead. The next batter, Wilkins, lined a double to right-center, driving in another run. Two batters later, Dani Weir hit an RBI single, giving BC a 6-1 lead. Blair Destito followed with another double to drive in Weir for a 7-1 lead before Kooistra, batting for the second time in the inning, grounded out to end the outburst.
After Darmouth cut the lead to 7-2 in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI double by Leigha Clarkson, the Eagles salted the game away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wilkins was hit for the second time in the game to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Tunstall connected on her fifth home run of the season over the left field fence to put BC up 9-2. After Blair Destito was hit by a pitch, and Kooistra walked, Taylor Peyton ended the game with an RBI single to left field, giving the Eagles a 10-2 victory.
The Eagles will take on Boston University tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. on the Boston University Softball Field.
