The Boston College softball team (18-29, 3-12 ACC) fell to Boston University, 1-0, in a pitcher's duel at the Boston University Softball Field.
BC starting pitcher Taylor Peyton (10-13) tied her season high with eight strikeouts in her 10th complete game effort of the year. She pitched six innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and six walks.
BU's lone run came off the bat of the first batter of the game, as Shayne Lolito's lead-off home run in the first inning gave the Terriers an early 1-0 lead. Peyton then walked three of the next four BU batters to load the bases with one out, before inducing a 1-2-3 double play to end the threat.
The Eagles threatened in the top of the third inning, as Carolyn Jones reached on an error, was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Brittany Wilkins, and then moved to third on an infield single by Irene Delagrammaticas, who stole second to put runners on second and third with one out. Dani Weir then lined into a double play at third base, as BU's Brooke Hudson tagged out Jones after catching Weir's line drive to end the inning.
The Terriers loaded the bases in the top of the fifth inning with one out, but Peyton recorded back-to-back strike outs of BU's 4 and 5 hitters to keep the Eagles within a run.
Peyton continued her run of strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth inning, retiring the Terriers in order for a run of five consecutive strikeouts to give the Eagles' offense a chance to tie or take the lead.
But BU starting pitcher Megan Currier, who pitched her 12th complete game of the year, retired the Eagles in order in the sixth and seventh innings to preserve the win for the Terriers.
BC will return to Shea Field to face Florida State in its final series of the season this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday. The first game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
Notes: In the first inning, Dani Weir's walk gave the Eagles 149 walks on the year, breaking the team single-season walks record set last season.
