CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College assistant coach Steve Englert, the field manager for Harwich in the Cape Cod Baseball League, led the Mariners to the Cape League Championship on August 15. Harwich swept Cotuit in a three-game series for Harwich's first title since 1987.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth, Mark Fleury delivered a pinch hit, two-run single for the walk-off win. The Mariners were able to load the bases with no outs following a leadoff triple, a hit batsman, and a walk. Over 6,000 fans watched the game at Harwich's Whitehouse Field.
Fleury commented on the BC assistant coach following his game-winner, saying, "Englert's the best guy in the world. He's one of the best coaches I've ever had. He deserved to win more than anyone else."
Englert has been with the Mariners for 10 seasons and was named field manager in 2003 after serving as assistant coach from 1998-2002. He has been on the BC staff for seven years.
