CARY, N.C. - Boston College (19-20, 5-15 ACC) managed just three hits against three different pitchers of the No. 4 North Carolina (33-7, 15-4 ACC) staff to fall, 6-0, at the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Saturday afternoon.
UNC starter Adam Warren (6-0) worked seven scoreless innings to help the Tar Heels take the second game of the series. The righty allowed 12 base runners, but was able to work out of multiple threats to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. Warren collected six strikeouts with four walks, while Colin Bates and Tyler Trice each tossed a perfect frame in the victory.
Right-hander Dan Houston (2-2) suffered the loss, working six innings with four walks and three strikeouts. The junior allowed four earned runs, all in the sixth inning, on five hits.
The Eagles squandered a prime opportunity in the top of the third inning. BC loaded the bases without the use of a hit. Barry Butera and Michael Belfiore drew back-to-back walks. After Tony Sanchez reached base on a fielder's choice, Eric Campbell was hit by a pitch to have all bases occupied. Warren worked out of the jam by striking out Mickey Wiswall to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard.
Houston put himself in bases loaded jam in the fifth. Seth Williams led off with a base hit to left field. Garret Gore laid down a bunt, which catcher Tony Sanchez tried to retire lead base runner Williams at second base. Williams beat the throw to put Tar Heels on first and second. Dustin Ackley drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Houston retired the next three batters via strikeout, pop up and ground out to escape the bases loaded, no out threat from the Tar Heels.
UNC put up a four-spot in the bottom of the sixth to break a scoreless tie. Kyle Seager led off the frame with a walk from Houston. Tim Federowicz executed a hit-an-run through the left side to put Tar Heels on the corners with no outs. Seager would later score on a wild pitch to tally the first run of the game. Garret Gore laced a single back through the box to plate two runs and Shelton lined a double to left center to up the score, 4-0.
A Shelton RBI single and unearned run in the eighth pushed the Tar Heels lead to 6-0.
BC will play the series finale tomorrow at noon against the Tar Heels at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.
