Baseball Falls to No. 4 North Carolina, 8-2

CARY, N.C. - Boston College (19-21, 5-16 ACC) dropped a 7-2 decision to the No. 4 North Carolina Tar Heels (34-7, 16-4 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
Tony Sanchez and Eric Campbell each tallied multi-hit games for the Eagles. Sanchez went 2-for-5, while Campbell collected a double, single and RBI in the loss.
UNC pitcher Matt Harvey (6-2) tossed 5.1 innings and allowed one earned run off six hits and eight strikeouts to help complete a three-game sweep of the Eagles.
James MacDonald (3-6) suffered the loss on the mound. The junior went 5.1 innings and tallied three strikeouts.
The Eagles notched the first run of the game in the second inning against UNC starter Matt Harvey. After the first two batters were retired, Matt Hamlet collected a base hit to center. Sam Shaughnessy laced a RBI double to right-center field to plate Hamlet from first base.
In the bottom half of the second, the Tar Heels pushed across two runs off four hits. Tim Federowicz lined a double down the left-field line off MacDonald. Ben Bunting knocked in Federowicz with a base hit to center field to even the score, 1-1. After Seth Williams reached base on a check-swing single to right, Garret Gore collected a RBI single to give UNC the lead.
BC knotted the score, 2-2, in the top of the third. Michael Belfiore drew a one-out walk. He advanced to third on a stolen base and throwing error, and scored on a two-out single by Campbell.
MacDonald retired 10 batters in a row, until Kyle Shelton hit a two-out triple down the right-field line in the fifth. Tim Fedroff lined a base hit up-the-middle to plate Shelton and give the Tar Heels the 3-2 advantage.
In the sixth, BC loaded the bases without registering a hit. Garret Smith reached on a one-out error, while Hamlet and pinch hitter Harry Darling each drew walks. Reliever Rob Wooten induced a fly out by Belfiore to escape the Eagles' threat.
UNC used a four-run sixth inning to push the lead to 7-2. After MacDonald struck out Kyle Seager, five consecutive Tar Heels laced base hits to break the game open.
The Eagles threatened in the top half of the seventh when the loaded the bases off Wooten. Sanchez hit a one-out single to right, followed by a double to left-center by Campbell. After Mickey Wiswall struck out, Smith filled the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Wooten kept the five-run lead intact with a Matt Hamlet pop up to end the frame.
The Tar Heels tacked on a run in the eighth on a RBI single from pinch hitter Ryan Graepel.
BC is back on the diamond on Tuesday, April 22, when the Eagles host Harvard at 3 p.m. at Commander Shea Field.
