Birdball Holds on to Defeat UConn

Nick Wang Leads with Four RBI
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - No. 24 Boston College Baseball (28-12, 11-7 ACC) defeated Connecticut (20-18, 6-3 Big East) in a midweek contest, 8-5.Â
Luke D'Ancona started for the Eagles and went 1.2 innings with two strikeouts while allowing two earned runs. Chase Hartsell relieved D'Ancona and threw a scoreless 1.1 innings of work. Hartsell was then replaced by Peter Schaefer, who threw two innings, allowing one run. Drew Grumbles came on in the sixth inning and worked a scoreless sixth before being replaced by Kyle Kipp, who pitched the seventh inning. John D Mitchell came on in the eighth inning and closed out the game with two scoreless innings while striking out one.Â
The Huskies got on the board at the top of the first when a double hit the wall to score a runner from first.Â
Boston College scored twice in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead. Julio Solier and Ty Mainolfi hit back-to-back singles and would advance to second and third for Nick Wang. Wang would ground out to the shortstop to bring in Solier and advance Mainolfi to third. Mainolfi scored a batter later when Jack Toomey flew out to right field.Â
UConn would tie the game at two in the very next inning. The Huskies would reach on an error, then come in to score on a double down the right-field line.Â
UConn retook the lead in the top of the fourth inning when a triple down the right field line scored a runner from first to make it 3-2.Â
The Eagles scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead into the sixth inning. Colin Larson led off the inning with a walk before coming in to score on Solier's fourth triple of the season. Solier made it 4-3 when Mainolfi doubled into left field. Mainolfi got the final run of the inning when Wang singled to right field to bring him in.Â
The Huskies got one back in the top of the seventh when, with runners at second and third, UConn was able to bring the runner in from third on a groundout to second base. The Huskies tied it at five when the throw to first was late, allowing the runner to score.Â
Boston College put up its second three-run inning in the bottom of the seventh inning. Wang hit his 13th home run of the season, 393 feet to left field, which also scored Mainolfi, who had led off the inning with a walk. The home run ties Wang for third most in BC history and 10th most in a single season. The Eagles loaded the bases after that, and Cesar Gonzalez brought in Jack Toomey on a fielder's choice.Â
