CARY, N.C. - Boston College (19-19, 5-14 ACC) scored two runs in the first inning, but only managed one run over the final eight, to fall against No. 4 North Carolina Tar Heels (32-7, 14-4 ACC), 12-3, Friday night at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
The Eagles collected a total 12 hits, led by Mickey Wiswall and Michael Belfiore, who each tallied three base knocks on the evening. Wiswall scored one run and a RBI, while Belfiore added a double and run scored.
Alex White (7-2) scattered 10 hits over 6.2 innings to earn the win for the Tar Heels. The sophomore right-hander recorded six strikeouts and allowed three earned runs to help UNC take game one of the three-game series.
Terry Doyle (3-5) suffered the loss for the Eagles. The right-hander broke a streak of six straight starts of working six innings or more by only tossing four frames. He allowed eight hits, with four strikeouts and two walks.
In the top of the first, BC snapped a 17.1 scoreless inning streak for White with a two-out two-run rally. Belfiore blooped a single into right field with one out. After White retired Tony Sanchez, Eric Campbell ripped a double to the left-center field gap to plate Belfiore. Wiswall followed with a RBI single through the right side to give the Eagles the early 2-0 lead.
Doyle sent the Tar Heels down in order in the first. The second inning was not as kind to the senior right-hander. UNC third baseman Chad Flack laced a double to right-center to start the frame. Kyle Seager launched the first pitch he saw over the right field fence to tie the score. After Seth Williams grounded out, Mark Fleury smacked a solo homer to take the lead, 3-2. Doyle would strikeout Tim Fedrowicz and Garret Gore to end the inning.
The Tar Heels tacked on three more runs in the third. Dustin Ackley led off with a triple to right center. He would score on a Fedroff RBI double. Kyle Shelton, who had reached on a walk earlier, scored on a wild pitch and Seager drove in Fedroff on a sac fly to extend the lead, 6-2.
BC answered with a run in the top of the fourth frame. After Campbell struck out, four consecutive Eagles reached base. A Wiswall single, John Spatola walk and Garret Smith single loaded the bases. Sam Shaughnessy hit a ground ball to second baseman Seager, which he beat out for a RBI base hit. White escaped without further damage with a strikeout of Mike Sudol and fly out by Barry Butera.
UNC scored three runs for the third straight inning to up the score to 9-3 in the fourth. After Doyle enticed a ground ball double play by Garret Gore, five straight batters reached base, capped off by a two-run homer by Fedroff to left center.
In the sixth, the Tar Heels added three more runs. Shelton hit a RBI triple down the right field line to score Ackley. Later in the inning, Seager hit a two-run blast, his second of the game, to round out the scoring.
The Eagles are back on the diamond tomorrow for the second game of the series against the Tar Heels at 1 p.m.
