CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College (18-16, 5-12 ACC) dropped a pair of games to No. 1 Florida State, Friday afternoon at Commander Shea Field. The Seminoles took the first game, 8-6, and followed up with a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.
Mickey Wiswall had a standout day at the plate for the Eagles. During the twin bill, the freshman designated hitter went 6-for-9 with two doubles, three runs and scored and three RBIs.
Game 1: FSU 8, BC 6
Boston College could not take full advantage of six Seminoles errors as No. 1 Florida State escaped with an 8-6 win in game one of the doubleheader.
Wiswall led the Eagles offense with a 4-for-5 day at the plate, including a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. The four hits in a game tied a career high for the freshman.
Terry Doyle (3-4) suffered the loss. The right-handed starter went six innings and allowed seven earned runs.
Florida State pushed across a run in the top of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Tyler Holt lined a double down the left-field line to start the game. Holt would advance to third on a wild pitch and come around to score on a sacrifice fly by Jack Rye to take the 1-0 lead.
In the top of the second, the Seminoles loaded the bases with two outs. Doyle was able to escape only surrendering one run in the frame. Holt hit a dribbler down the third-base line for an infield single, which gave FSU a two run lead.
The Seminoles tacked on four more runs in the top half of the fourth. Tommy Oravetz smacked a double off the right field fence. Ohmed Danesh followed with a walk to put FSU runners on first and second with one out. After Stuart Tapley flew out to left field, Holt laced a two-run double to center field. Jason Stidham followed with a RBI single to left. Buster Posey lined a double off the fence in right field. Rye followed with an infield RBI single to round out the four-run fourth for the Seminoles.
The Eagles tallied five runs off four hits in the bottom of the fourth off FSU starter Matt Fairel (8-0). The five-run inning marked the most runs that Fairel had allowed in a game all season. Through his first three innings of work, Fairel had cruised through the BC order as he only surrendered a second inning double to Wiswall.
Tony Sanchez started the rally with a base hit through the left side. Eric Campbell and Garret Smith drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Wiswall. The designated hitter hit a single to center to plate both Sanchez and Campbell. Matt Hamlet followed with a base hit to left to re-load the bases. Fairel uncorked a wild pitch over the head of catcher Buster Posey to plate Smith. With two outs, Marc Perdios lined a base hit to left field to score both Wiswall and Hamlet.
After a scoreless fifth inning from both squads, FSU pushed across a run in the sixth on a RBI double from Posey.
BC added a run in the sixth to make the score 7-6 in favor of the Seminoles. Wiswall lined a base hit to right field, which was misplayed and allowed him to move to second and would later score on a Sam Shaughnessy sac fly.
Eric Campbell just missed tying the game at seven runs apiece when he smashed a pitch from FSU reliever Jimmy Marshall down the left field line that hooked foul. The Seminoles kept the Eagles off the scoreboard and held onto their one run advantage.
In the eighth, the Eagles loaded the bases again. Wiswall started the frame with a single to center, his fourth hit of the game. Hamlet attempted to sacrifice Wiswall to second, but a Seminoles fielder misplayed the bunt, which allowed both runners to be safe on the play. BC loaded the bases with two outs, but Marshall retired Belfiore on a ground out to end the threat.
Posey gave the Seminoles a two-run cushion in the ninth when he connected for a solo blast off reliever Nick Asselin. The homer marked the tenth of the season for Posey.
Seminoles' reliever Ryan Strauss pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save of the season.
Game 2: FSU 4, BC 3
FSU's Jack Rye hit a solo homer off BC reliever Chris Kowalski over the right-field fence to break a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning to propel the Seminoles past the Eagles and sweep the doubleheader, 4-3.
Dan Houston tossed seven solid innings, but did not figure in the decision. The junior allowed three earned runs on six hits with eight strikeouts.
BC scored a run off three hits in the bottom of the first inning of FSU starter Geoff Parker (3-1). Belfiore and Sanchez hit consecutive one-out singles to start the rally. After Campbell flew out, Wiswall lined a base hit to right field to score Belfiore and give the Eagles the early lead.
FSU tied the score and took the lead in the second, 2-1. Tommy Oravetz hit a RBI triple to right field, and would score on a RBI single by Stuart Tapley. BC starter Dan Houston escaped the frame without further damage when Buster Posey flew out with the bases loaded.
In the fourth, BC scored two runs off two hits. Wiswall continued his hot streak as he blooped a double to left. He would move to third base on a sac bunt by Hamlet. John Spatola followed with a RBI triple down the right-field line. He would score on a sac fly by Shaughnessy to retake the lead, 3-2.
FSU knotted the score, 3-3, in the fifth on a RBI single to left field by Rye to score Posey from second base.
In the top of the eighth, Rye broke a 3-3 tie with a solo blast to right field off BC reliever Chris Kowalski.
In the top of the ninth, the Seminoles loaded the bases on two hits and a walk off reliever Nick Asselin. First baseman Michael Belfiore relieved Asselin on the mound, and the left-hander retired Rye on a fly ball to end the inning.
Strauss pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the save and preserve the 4-3 victory against the Eagles.
