CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The No. 1 Florida State Seminoles (31-3, 17-1 ACC) defeated the Boston College Eagles (18-17, 5-13 ACC), 17-2, on Saturday afternoon at Commander Shea Field. The Seminoles swept the three-game series from the Eagles, with wins on Friday of 8-6 and 4-3.
Mickey Wiswall collected three of the Eagles seven hits on the day. The freshman went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, and went 9-for-12 in the series.
In the second, FSU batted around as they scored seven runs off six hits to break the game wide open to take a 7-0 advantage. Tommy Oravetz started the outburst for FSU when he connected on a solo home run off the right field scoreboard. In his second at bat of the frame, Oravetz would hit a bases clearing double off the right field fence to give the Seminoles a seven run cushion.
FSU pushed across two more runs in the third off BC relief pitcher Ted Ratliff. Jason Stidham scored Stuart Tapley on a sacrifice fly and Posey plated Tyler Holt with a RBI single.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Eagles made their first threat against Seminoles pitcher Elih Villanueva (4-0). Eric Campbell and Wiswall hit consecutive one-out singles to right field. Villanueva escaped the threat by retiring Garret Smith on a fly out and John Spatola on a line out to shortstop to keep 9-0 lead in tact.
The Seminoles tacked on a run in the top of the fifth, a run in the seventh, two in the eighth, and four in the ninth. The four runs in the ninth came off a Tony Delmonico grand slam.
The Eagles pushed across their only runs of the game in the top of the eighth. Robert Anston and Mike Sudol started the inning with back-to-back singles. They would come around and score later in the inning on RBI ground outs by Butera and Michael Belfiore.
BC is back on the diamond on Tuesday at Fenway Park in Boston, Mass., to play Massachusetts in the Beanpot Championship at 4 p.m.
