Chestnut Hill, Mass - The women's lacrosse team made a strong showing during its fall ball campaign, competing in three tournaments and scrimmaging two teams to prepare for the spring season.
The Eagles began the fall with a scrimmage against the German Touring Team on Sept. 22. The team spent an hour teaching the German athletes various concepts and then the two squads competed against each other.
"It was a great day of lacrosse and exciting for all who took part," Head Coach Bowen Holden said.
BC then traveled to Durham, N.H., to take on regional rivals Holy Cross, Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire in the UNH Tournament on Sept. 30. The Eagles worked through many different lineups and improved throughout the day. Holden felt that the solid competition helped her team know where it stood and what else needed to be accomplished.
The following weekend BC competed in the Beanpot Tournament hosted by Boston University. The Eagles battled cross town-foe BU, UMass and Brown in the annual competition. Noting her team's competitive play against its opponents, Holden saw several important improvements and gained confidence for the 2008 season.
Boston College capped off the fall tournament schedule by traveling to Fairfax, Va., for the George Mason Tournament on Oct. 20. BC took the field against William & Mary, Richmond, Penn State and American. After a difficult start to the day, the Eagles got back on track and ended on a strong note heading into the final scrimmage of the fall season.
Finally, the Eagles ended fall ball with a scrimmage against Connecticut at home on Oct. 28. Another strong opponent, UConn enabled BC to put all the pieces together and see what still lies ahead for the spring.
"Immense strides were made, everyone had the opportunity to compete, and the Eagles are looking forward to an exciting 2008 season," Holden said.
In addition to competing on the field, the Eagles also participated in many volunteer activities throughout the fall. Numerous athletes spent time in the Franciscan Children's Hospital bringing smiles to so many faces. The entire team welcomed children from the Massachusetts Hospital School to campus for a morning of dancing and singing at the recreation complex. Other members of this year's team have given back to the community through the HEAR (Help Educate through Athletic Responsibility) program and serving food at local food pantries.
Holden sees the improvements made on the field and is proud of the work off it.
"I am extremely proud of the accomplishments of the 2008 team on the field and off this fall season," Holden said. "The hard work on the field has paid off and the amount of time our athletes have spent giving back to others is incredible. They manage to balance it all and love taking part in these activities that bring so much joy to those less fortunate. I know this type of work will continue in the months and years ahead."
Boston College will open the 2008 season at home against ACC-foe Maryland on Feb. 24 at 1 p.m.
