Softball Splits with No. 22 North Carolina

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College softball team split a doubleheader with No. 22 North Carolina on Saturday, April 8, at BC's Shea Field. The Tar Heels edged the Eagles by a 3-2 margin in game one, but Boston College came back in the second game to defeat North Carolina, 3-2. With the win, the Eagles improve to 15-16 overall and 2-9 in the ACC. Britney Thompson hit a home run and earned the save in game two.
In game one, North Carolina jumped out to the lead in the fourth inning with a Jennifer Jacobs solo home run. Emily Troup singled to drive in Anna Evans to extend the lead to 2-0.
Boston College tied the score in the sixth inning. Jenna Macchi singled to right field, and Renee Ramos doubled to put runners on second and third. Elena Ferrero singled and Macchi and Ramos scored on the play.
North Carolina scored the winning run in the top of the seventh with a single from Cassie Palmer that drove in Breanna Brown.
Thompson pitched seven innings for the Eagles, striking out five batters and allowing three runs on seven hits.
In game two, the Eagles scored all three of their runs in a productive third inning. Ferrero collected her team-leading 28th RBI with a single, and Ramos scored from second base. Britney Thompson stepped up to the plate next and ripped off her eighth home run of the season and to put the Eagles on top, 3-0.
North Carolina cut the lead to two in the fourth and came within one in the sixth off a solo homerun. However, the Eagles maintained their lead with strong fielding. With runners on first and third and one out, North Carolina's Lisa Norris reached on a fielder's choice when Ferrero threw to home to get Anna Evans out at the plate.
Thompson came in for Savana Lloyd with the bases loaded and pitched the final 1.1 innings. Thompson made the final play of the game as she fielded Casey Testa's ground ball and threw to first base.
Savana Lloyd earned her sixth win of the season, striking out two batters in 5.2 innings on the mound. Thompson earned her first save of the season.
The Eagles and Tar Heels square off again on Sunday, April 8, at 1:00 p.m. at Shea Field.
