Chestnut Hill, Mass. - A four-run first inning clinched game two of the Sonny Nictakis Fall World Series as they would score all the runs they would need in the first inning holding on for a final score of 4-2. The Gold scored all the runs off of Maroon starter, freshman Jimmy Cozza.
In a similar show of power to game one, the Gold used two doubles to plate four runs - all with two outs. They sent 10 men to the plate and left the bases loaded before Cozza was able to record the third out.
The Maroon cut the margin in half in the third inning but Nate Jeannes came in for starter, Geoff Oxley, and worked out of a one-out-bases-loaded jam by inducing back to back infield pop-ups. Jeannes worked the remaining four-and-two-thirds innings to record the save. He gave up only two hits the rest of the way and the Maroon never truly threatened the Gold lead again.
Joe Ayers was the offensive star of the game for the Gold, pacing the attack with two hits and a run scored. Ted Ratliff and JB MacDonald came in for the Maroon and shutdown the Gold bats but the damage had already been done. The two teams will square off again on Sunday, October 15, for Game three of the series.
With Gold taking games one and two, the series will be determined by overall runs scored. Gold has outscored Maroon 14-4 and also receives a two- run bonus for the two wins. Game 3 will be a nine-inning affair and the Maroon will need to score 12 runs to even the scoring.
The Maroon has been a resilient squad throughout the fall playoff run as they stormed back from a six-run deficit in the deciding game of the super regional weekend before succumbing to the Gold in extra innings.
Game time is once again slated for 10:45 AM. Starting pitchers for both teams have yet to be announced.
