South Bend, Ind. - The Boston College softball team split a BIG EAST doubleheader with Notre Dame Friday afternoon at Ivy Field in South Bend. The Fighting Irish won the first game, 8-0 in 5 innings, while the Eagles bounced back to take the second, 5-4 in 11 innings. With the split, the Eagles are 18-22 on the season and 6-8 in the BIG EAST. Notre Dame is 32-22 overall and 6-8 in the BIG EAST.
The Boston College bats were silenced by Notre Dame pitching ace Stephanie Stenglein in the first game. Stenglein held BC to just one hit on the afternoon, off the bat of Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah). The Eagles committed two errors and gave up nine hits for the eight runs over five innings. Notre Dame scored two in the fourth and exploded for six in the fifth to halt the game early.
In the second game, however, Boston College showed signs of life from the first pitch. The Eagles scored two runs in the first inning to go up 2-0 early. Notre Dame rallied back for three in the third and one in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. Not for long, however, as BC scored two in the seventh to tie the game at four. The Eagles pushed the winning run across in the top of the 11th.
In the first, Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) smacked an RBI triple that plated Carley McNary (Norton, Mass.), who reached on an error. Hopkin then scored on a wild pitch for the 2-0 advantage. Notre Dame scored three runs on three hits and one BC error in the third, and added another run on two hits in the sixth for a 4-2 edge.
In the seventh, however, BC rallied for two runs of its own to tie the game. Thompson drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second when Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) followed with a single. With one out, both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Amanda Brooks (Los Angeles, Calif.), who pinch-ran for Thompson, scored on a Kristin Allain (Worcester, Mass.) sacrifice fly. Ferrero delivered a single that plated Daly for the 4-4 tie.
In the seventh, the Eagles put together a two-out rally as Thompson and Daly drew back-to-back walks. Daly scored the winning run when Jenna Macchi (Milford, Mass.) smacked a single up the middle. Daly also pitched the complete-game victory, improving to 9-9 on the season.
Boston College will take on Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon.
