Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Boston College softball team dropped a heartbreaking BIG EAST doubleheader with Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon at Trees Field in Pittsburgh. In both games, BC held a lead heading into the last inning. The Panthers, however, stormed back to win both games by a 4-3 margin, the second game in eight innings. With the losses, the Eagles are 18-24 on the season and 6-10 in the BIG EAST. Pittsburgh is 22-24 overall and 8-6 in the BIG EAST.
In game one, Pittsburgh scored in the home half of the first inning on a triple and groundout for a quick 1-0 lead. Boston College tied it in the fourth, when Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.), Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.), and Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) smacked consecutive singles.
The Eagles then went ahead 3-1 with single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. In the fifth, Carley McNary (Norton, Mass.) reached on an error and scored when Hopkin delivered a single. In the seventh, Hopkin knocked in another run for the 3-1 advantage. Pittsburgh won the game on a three-run home run with one out in the seventh.
Hopkin and Obrest each went 2-for-4 on the afternoon as Hopkin knocked in two runs. Thompson took the loss on the mound, falling to 8-10 on the season.
Game two saw much of the same for Boston College. The Eagles went up first this time, scoring a single run on three hits in the first as Thompson collected an RBI. Pittsburgh went ahead 3-1 on two hits and an error in the third, but BC came back to tie it in the fifth. A lead-off walk and three straight singles, including RBI singles from Amanda Booth (Riverside, Calif.) and Obrest, gave the Eagles a two-run lead. Once again, however, Pittsburgh put forth some late-inning heroics, knocking a double and sacrifice fly to keep their hopes alive. The Panthers would score the winning run on a BC fielding error.
Ferrero took the loss on the mound, falling to 1-5. Booth was 3-for-4 on the afternoon while McNary, Thompson, and Ferrero each had two hits.
Boston College will face Massachusetts Wednesday afternoon.
