Lacrosse Tops Massachusetts In Double Overtime, 13-12

Babson Park, Mass. - Senior Jackie Yovankin netted the game-winning goal with 39 seconds remaining in double overtime to lift the Boston College women's lacrosse team to a 13-12 win over the University of Massachusetts tonight at Babson College. Six different players scored for the Eagles (6-2) in the victory.
In the first half, UMass (3-5) got on the board first at 29:46. The Minutemen added another goal less than a minute later on a free position shot to take an early 2-0 advantage.
The Eagles responded when Susie Breaznell connected on a free position goal at 27.51.
Trailing 4-1 at 16:27, Lizette Blohm tallied her first goal of the game and two minutes later Katherine Wagoner cut the deficit to one on a free position goal.
At 12:35 UMass scored its fifth goal of the game, but Blohm answered with her second goal of the night to make the score 5-4.
The Minutemen went on a 3-0 run at 10:47 to extend its lead to four.
With 1:47 remaining in the half, Breaznell found the back of the net on a free position shot. After a UMass score, Carley St. Lucia took the ball off the draw control and scored her first goal of the night with 33 seconds left on the clock.
BC headed into halftime trailing 8-6.
Tara McKennett made one save in the opening 21:23 and Courtney Zwirko played the remainder of the half for the Eagles. BC out-shot UMass 13-10 in the first half.
In the second half, Blohm cut the UMass lead to one with a free position goal at 25:36.
The Minutemen scored two straight goals, but the Eagles answered with four consecutive scores to take its first lead of the night. Breaznell sparked the run at 14:37 with an unassisted tally. Yovankin connected off a pass from Courtney Legath at 8:24 and Legath found Shauna Culhane at 6:10 to tie the game at 10. Culhane scored her second consecutive goal for BC's sixth free position goal score of the game. The Eagles had its first lead of the night at 4:02.
With 1:09 left in regulation, UMass evened the score at 11 to force an extra session.
In the first overtime, St.Lucia put the Eagles on the board first with her second goal of the game. Breaznell assisted on the score. The Minutemen responded in the second half of the first overtime with a goal at 1:45 to force sudden death.
With 39 seconds remaining in the second overtime period, Elizabeth Kadison passed to Yovankin who fired the ball into the back of the net to give the Eagles the win.
Yovankin and St. Lucia dominated in the midfield by picking up four groundballs each. Yovankin won a team-high four draw controls, and St. Lucia forced a team-high three turnovers.
Zwirko made six saves for BC, while Lauren McCarthy stopped eight shots on goal for UMass.
BC will travel to Storrs, Conn. on Wednesday, April 6 to face Big-East opponent Connecticut. The game starts at 7 p.m.
