Boston College pitchers surrendered a season-high 17 hits on Sunday as the Eagles lost the final game of a three-game set with Rutgers, 11-8, in Piscataway, N.J.
Sophomore third baseman Jared Mcguire extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate. McGuire knocked in three runs and stole his team-leading 18th base of the season in the loss.
Rutgers scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the first to jump out to an early lead against BC starter Nate Jeanes. The Scarlet Knights collected four more hits in the fourth inning as they took a 5-0 lead.
The Eagles got on the board in the top of the sixth inning after designated hitter Ryne Reynoso blasted his second home run of the season to right field.
After Rutgers took a commanding 11-4 lead, the Eagles came screaming back in the top of the eighth, scoring four runs on five hits.
Right fielder Mike Flynn started the rally with a single to center field and after Reynoso struck out, shortstop Jonny Weiss was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Second baseman Johnny Ayers followed with a single through the left side to load the bases.
First baseman Dave Preziosi was drilled by a Sean Spicher pitch to knock in Flynn and cut the Rutgers lead to six. Senior Drew Locke singled to center to score Weiss and with the bases still loaded, McGuire followed with a two-run single to center.
After Rutgers went down quietly in the bottom half of the inning, Reynoso led off the ninth with a single, but the Eagles couldn't put together a rally and made three consecutive outs to end the game.
BC pounded out 37 hits and scored 29 runs in the three-game series. Locke was 6-for-12 with a home run, two doubles and five RBIs on the weekend.
