Softball Wins Two To Open War Eagle Classic

Auburn, Ala. - The Boston College softball team opened up the War Eagle Classic with two wins on the first day at Jane B. Moore Field on the campus of Auburn University. The Eagles opened the day with a 4-2 win over Auburn before beating Austin Peay, 10-1. BC stands at 4-4 on the season.
In the first game of the day, the Eagles jumped out with three runs on three hits in the first inning. Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) and Kristin Allain (Worcester, Mass.) belted back-to-back singles to start the inning. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch and then Hopkin scored on another wild pitch. Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) followed with a one-out homerun that plated two runs for the quick 3-0 lead.
The Eagles added an insurance run in the fifth inning as Hopkin belted an RBI double that scored Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.), who reached on a double of her own to start the inning. Boston College would surrender two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth, but hung on for the win, allowing just one hit over the last two innings of play.
Thompson picked up the win in the mound, improving to 2-2. She struck out three while walking just one and scattering seven hits. Hopkin, Allain, Thompson, and Obrest collected the Eagle hits as Thompson knocked in two runs.
In the second game of the afternoon, BC exploded for 10 runs on 11 hits. The Eagles pushed three runs across in each of the first, fourth, and sixth innings. In the first, Thompson belted an RBI single while Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) added an RBI on a groundout. In the third, Angela Pandolfo (Reading, Mass.) gave BC its fourth run with an RBI single.
The Eagles expanded their lead to 7-1 with a three-run fourth. Jenna Macchi (Milford, Mass.) knocked a two-rbi single while Thompson knocked in another run. Obrest knocked a three-run homer in the sixth inning for the final 10-1 margin.
Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) earned the win in the circle, improving to 2-1. Hopkin, Macchi, Thompson, and Obrest each knocked two hits. Obrest collected three RBI, while Macchi and Thompson had two each.
Boston College will next take on Birmingham-Southern (10:00 am) and Gardner Webb (12:30 pm) Saturday.
