Auburn, Ala. - The Boston College softball team went 1-1 on the second day of the War Eagle Classic at Jane B. Moore Field on the campus of Auburn University. The Eagles opened the day with a 6-1 win over Birmingham-Southern before falling 2-1 to Gardner Webb in the second game. Boston College stands at 5-5 on the season.
In the first game of the day, Boston College overcame a 1-0 deficit to Birmingham-Southern by scoring runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. The Eagles belted seven hits for their six runs, beginning with three in the fourth inning.
After surrendering a single run to the Panthers in the third, BC scored three of its own in the fourth. Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) walked and Carley McNary (Norton, Mass.), who pinch ran for Field, stole second. McNary and Thompson scored ahead of Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.), who followed with a three-run home run.
A couple of wild pitches, an error, and a two-run double by Thompson pushed a pair of runs across in the fifth, giving BC a 5-1 lead. The Eagles got another run on a two-out single by Kristin Allain (Worcester, Mass.) in the sixth for the final 6-1 margin.
Thompson picked up the win in the circle, improving to 3-2 overall. She led the way at the plate as well, with a 2-for-2, two-RBI performance. Hopkin, Allain, Obrest, Jenna Macchi (Milford, Mass.), and Angela Pandolfo (Reading, Mass.) all had one hit while Obrest tallied three RBI.
In the second game of the afternoon, the Eagles gave up a run in the top of the first and came back to tie the game in the third. After a fielding error gave Gardner Webb a 1-0, Boston College manufactured a run by stringing together a two-out walk from Obrest and an RBI double from Pandolfo. With the score notched at one, Gardner Webb pushed a run across in the sixth inning for the win. Boston College squandered a one-out pinch-hit double from Elena Ferrero (Van Nuys, Calif.) in the seventh inning.
Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) was the hard-luck loser on the mound. She struck out five in seven complete innings. The Eagles collected six hits on the afternoon with Macchi (2-4) and Pandolfo (2-3) leading the way.
Boston College earned the No. 1 seed after pool play and will face Austin Peay in the 11:00 a.m. game Sunday. If the Eagles win, they will vie for the tournament championship at 1:30 p.m.
