Softball Splits On Final Day Of War Eagle Classic

Auburn, Ala. - The Boston College softball team lost a 7-6 heartbreaker to Auburn University in the championship game of the War Eagle Classic at Jane B. Moore Field on the campus of Auburn University. The Eagles started the day with a 10-3 win over Austin Peay before falling in the final game of the tournament. After two weekend tournaments, Boston College stands at 6-6 on the season.
In the first game of the day, Boston College belted 13 hits as six different players collected at least one hit. Middle infielder Jenna Macchi (Milford, Mass.) was a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI on the afternoon while Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) added a 2-for-3 effort. Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) collected three RBI.
The Eagles pushed three runs across in the third and four in the second to jump out to a lead that would stand for the game. Thompson belted a three-run homer to lead the first-inning attack while Macchi smacked a two-run double in the second to spark that rally.
Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) picked up the win on the mound, going a complete seven innings. The senior struck out three while allowing just three runs scored.
In the second game of the afternoon, the Eagles could not capitalize on four Auburn errors. Despite rallying back to tie the game at six in the sixth inning, Boston College was unable to capture its second win over Auburn during the weekend.
Boston College collected seven hits with Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.) leading the way with a 2-for-3 effort. Macchi accounted for four RBI on the afternoon, one in the fifth and three in the six, as BC made its rally to climb back into the game.
Thompson was the hard-luck loser in the circle, going 6.2 innings. An Auburn triple and double accounted for the final run of the game, giving the Tigers a 7-6 win.

Boston College will next travel to the Worth Invitational at California State-Fullerton March 4-6.
