Boca Raton, Fla. - The Boston College softball team wrapped up the FAU/Worth Invitational with a split on the final day at FAU Field on the campus of Florida Atlantic University. The Eagles opened the day with an 8-2 win over Florida Atlantic before falling 8-5 to Northwestern. BC stands at 2-4 on the season.
In the first game of the day, the Eagles scored multiple runs in three separate innings, pounding the Owl pitching staff for 14 hits. A two-run double by Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) and an RBI single by Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) in the fourth extended BC's lead to 5-0. After surrendering two runs, BC fought back to add three more insurance runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-out, two-run double by freshman Jamie Van Dijk (Moreno Valley, Calif.).
Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) picked up the win in the mound, her first of the year (1-2). She struck out seven on the afternoon. Five different Eagles had multiple hits on the afternoon, including a 3-for-5 effort for Hopkin.
In the second game of the afternoon, BC would have another shot at Northwestern. The Eagles took an early lead, pushing five runs across in the second inning. An RBI single by Van Dijk and a two-run single by Daly spearheaded the attack. Northwestern, however, stormed back with four runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
Elena Ferrero (Van Nuys, Calif.) took the loss on the mound as the Eagles used a trio of pitchers.
Boston College will next be in action at the War Eagle Classic at Auburn University February 18-20.
