CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) hit a two-run home run but UMass plated three runs - all unearned - in the top of the sixth and earned the 3-2 non-conference victory Thursday at Shea Field.
Freshman pitcher Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) struck out nine in six innings of work. She gave up no earned runs on six hits and took the loss for BC. Kelli Arnold pitched four innings of scoreless relief and earned her team-leading 17th win of the season for UMass. The Minutewomen improve to 31-13 on the year while Boston College falls to 31-22.
After Kristin Allain (Worcester, Mass.) lead off the sixth with a single through the left side, Hopkin launched her fourth home run of year over the right field fence to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. But UMass responded. After Thompson pitched out of a two-out bases loaded situation by striking out pinch-hitter Denise Denis in the fourth, the Minutewomen loaded the bases again, this time with no outs in the top of the sixth and took advantage of one error and one wild pitch by BC to plate three unearned runs and earn the win.
Hopkin and junior Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) each tallied two hits on the day for BC. Amanda Morin recorded the only multiple-hit game for UMass.
Boston College will host Pittsburgh for its regular-season home finale Saturday, May 8 at noon. The game will mark the last home contest for six seniors. The Eagles close out the regular season Sunday, May 9 at UMass.
