CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College softball team won a pair of conference games with Pittsburgh Saturday afternoon at Shea Field. With the wins, Boston College has kept BIG EAST Tournament post-season hopes alive. The Eagles won 3-2 and 3-0, improving to 33-22 overall and (11-9 BIG EAST).
Game One - Boston College 3, Pittsburgh 2
The Eagles got on the board early, pushing a run across in the bottom of the first inning. Back-to-back singles by Jenna Macchi (Milford, Mass.) and Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.) set the table for Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) who grounded to first base, scoring Macchi for the 1-0 lead.
After Pittsburgh tied the game with an unearned run in the fourth inning, the Eagles got two more in their half of the inning when Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.) celebrated senior day with a two-run homer to right field.
Pittsburgh cut the lead to 3-2 with another unearned run in the fifth inning, but BC held on for the win. Kristin Allain (Worcester, Mass.) was perfect on the afternoon with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate.
Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) collected the win in the circle and improved to 11-7 on the season. She scattered four hits in five innings. Thompson pitched two innings of relief for her third save.
Game Two - Boston College 3, Pittsburgh 0
Sophomore Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) lined a two-run home run to center to give Boston College starting pitcher Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) all she would need as the Eagles blanked Pittsburgh, 3-0 in the second game of the double header.
Boston College did all its scoring in the bottom half of the third. After Hopkins' fifth home run of the season and second in as many days, Thompson helped her cause with a double before freshman Ashley Obrest's (Elmwood Park, Ill.) RBI-single to right-center.
Thompson, who carried a no-hitter through five, pitched a complete game and allowed three hits, stuck out five and earned her team-leading 13th win on the year.
The Eagles hope to be one of four teams participating in the 2004 BIG EAST Tournament in Syracuse, N.Y. on May 13-15.
