CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College softball team split a BIG EAST doubleheader with St. John's Sunday afternoon at Shea Field. The Eagles fell in the first game, 10-0 in five innings, but bounced back for a 5-2 win in the night cap. With the split, the Eagles are 27-21 overall and 7-9 in the BIG EAST.
Game One -St. John's 10, Boston College 0 (5 innings)
Boston College was plagued by four errors as the Red Storm touched BC pitching for six hits and 10 runs in just five innings of play. After taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning, St. John's pushed seven runs across in the fourth inning. BC could not recover.
The Eagles managed just two hits on the game, coming at the bats of Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) and Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.). Daly was the hard-luck loser on the mound, going 3.2 innings while allowing seven runs and four hits.
Game Two - Boston College 5, St. John's 2
Boston College rebounded nicely to take game two behind a nine-hit offensive attack that began in the first inning. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead after one, pushing two runs across on a single by Elyse Meredith (Basking Ridge, N.J.).
The Eagles got three insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, back-to-back RBI singles by Mackey and Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.) gave the Eagles a 5-0 lead. Obrest was 3-for-3 with two RBI on the afternoon while seven different players collected a hit.
Despite being touched up for two late-game home runs, Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) got the win on the mound and improved to 8-7 on the season. Malandris pitched the complete game, striking out nine while allowing two runs.
The Eagles will return to Shea field Thursday when they host Harvard in a single game beginning at 4:00 p.m. Boston College will return to conference play with a May 2 doubleheader at Providence.
