CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College softball team split a BIG EAST doubleheader with Seton Hall Saturday afternoon at Shea Field. The Eagles took the first game, 2-0 in nine innings, before dropping a heartbreaking 1-0 decision in the night cap. With the split, the Eagles are 26-20 overall and 6-8 in the BIG EAST.
Game One -Boston College 2, Seton Hall 0 (9 innings)
Junior catcher Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) delivered a two-out home run in the bottom half of the ninth inning to give the Eagles a 2-0 win in game one of the twin bill. Field collected three of BC's five hits, going 3-for-3 on the afternoon with the game-winning hit and both RBI.
With two outs in the final inning, Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.) was hit by the pitch. She crossed the plate with the eventual game-winning run on Field's next at-bat.
Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) got the win on the mound, improving to 7-7 on the season. The senior scattered five hits while collecting six strikeouts and working her way out of a few tough situations.
Game Two - Seton Hall 1, Boston College 0
In another defensive battle, one inning proved to be the difference when the Pirates struck for the game's lone run in the top half of the sixth inning. Caitlin White led off with a bunt single and D'arcy Djakalovic moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Laura Taylor delivered a line drive shot down the right field line that plated White for what would be the game-winning run.
Boston College would threaten in the seventh inning, but a super play by Katie Pierce to snag a line drive by Field left two BC runners in scoring position. Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) took the loss on the mound, scattering three hits while striking out three.
The Eagles will return to the field Sunday when they host St. John's in a doubleheader starting at 12 noon.
