Softball Drops Doubleheader at Rutgers

Piscataway, N.J. - The Boston College softball team dropped a pair of contests at Rutgers Sunday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights, led by senior Nikki Childress who went 5-for-7 with a home run, five RBI and two runs scored, won 3-1 in game one and 9-3 in game two. With the losses, the Eagles fell to 25-19 overall and 5-7 in the BIG EAST.
Game one was tied 1-1 in the sixth until the Scarlet Knights scored a pair on a 2-0 home run by Childress to put RU ahead for good, 3-1.
Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) took the loss on the mound.
In the second game, BC struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) lined a two-out single and then scored on a double into the right field gap off the bat of Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.).
Rutgers then started off the home half of the first inning with a single through the left side. The lead-off runner moved to third on consecutive groundouts. Childress then ripped a single through the right side to bring home a single run, giving her team a 1-0 lead.
RU added three more in the fifth on a pair of home runs. Childress led off the inning with a single and scored on senior Brittney Neer's first home run of the year. Two batters later, Rutgers smashed a solo shot for a 4-0 lead.
The Eagles pulled to within one after plating three runs in the sixth, but the Scarlet Knights responded by scoring five runs in the bottom half of the inning on six hits and a pair of Boston College errors to extend the lead to 9-3. Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.), Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) and Mackey all collected two hits on the afternoon.
Daly took the loss on the mound.
The Eagles will return to the field on Saturday, April 24, when they host Seton Hall in a doubleheader starting at 12 noon. They will then host St. John's Sunday afternoon.
