South Orange, N.J. - The Boston College softball team split a pair of BIG EAST games with Seton Hall Sunday afternoon at Cameron Field in New Jersey. The Eagles fell 4-3 in the first game, but bounced back to take a 9-2 victory in game two. They improved to 32-18 overall and 14-5 BIG EAST with the games. Seton Hall stands at 37-12 overall and 13-7 in the conference.
In game one, the hosts would push all four runs across in the bottom half of the opening inning. Seton Hall would make the four runs stand, despite a pesky BC team chipping away at the lead. BC cut the deficit in half with two runs in the top of the second inning. RBI singles by Elyse Meredith (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Elena Ferrero (Van Nuys, Calif.) put the Eagles on the board. They would collect a single run in the fourth inning on another Meredith RBI single but could get no closer than the final 4-3 margin. Meredith was a perfect 3-for-3 on the afternoon with two RBI.
In game two, BC took a 3-2 lead after one full inning and exploded for six runs in the third inning to put the game out of reach. BC collected three runs on four hits to open the game in the first inning. Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.) knocked a homerun that accounted for all three runs. The Eagles added six runs on seven hits in the third inning. Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.) led off with a homerun and Jen Asbury (Livermore, Calif.) and Blumfield followed with singles. With one out, Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) delivered and RBI single up the middle and all runners advanced on the throw home. Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) then followed with a two-run double down the left field line and Meredith added another double, good for one run driven in.
The Eagles pounded out 14 hits as four different players belted multiple hits. Mackey was a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI while Blumfield was 2-for-4 with a team-high three RBI. Field added two RBI.
Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) pitched the win for the Eagles. In six innings of work, she collected 14 strikeouts while allowing five hits and just one walk. Malandris improved to 11-7 on the season.
With a 14-5 BIG EAST record, Boston College finished in second place and will participate in the BIG EAST Softball Championship to be held in Salem, Virginia May 8-11.
