Second-Seeded Softball Drops First BIG EAST Tournament Game

Salem, Va. - The second-seeded Boston College softball team dropped a 7-1 decision to third-seeded Villanova on the first day of the 2003 BIG EAST Softball Championship, held at James I. Moyer Softball Complex in Salem, Virginia. With the setback, BC falls to 32-19 on the season and will play Seton Hall Friday at 5:00 p.m..
Boston College mustered just four hits on the afternoon, scoring its lone run in the seventh inning when Jen Asbury (Livermore, Calif.) singled up the middle to score Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) who had singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a throwing error. Hopkin was 2-for-3 on the afternoon while Asbury and Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.) both went 1-for-3.
The Wildcats touched up the Eagle pitching tandem of Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) and Kim Ryan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) for 10 hits and five earned runs. The duo combined for seven strikeouts on the afternoon.
Boston College hopes to avoid elimination with Friday's game against Seton Hall.
