Worcester, Mass. -- The Boston College softball team collected a pair of non-conference wins at Holy Cross Wednesday afternoon at Freshman Field in Worcester, Mass. The Eagles topped the Crusaders, 7-1 and 3-0, en route to ending the Crusaders' six game win streak. With the two wins, BC improves to 24-14 overall.
Pitcher Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) was the story of the afternoon for BC. The sophomore threw 12 1/3 innings combined over two games, giving up just one run on five hits. She collected 17 total strikeouts, including 11 in game one. She also helped her own cause at the plate, going 3-for-7 with an RBI and two runs scored.
In the first game of the day, Boston College got on the board first as Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.) belted a leadoff double and scored on a subsequent throwing error. After Holy Cross tied the game at one in the second inning, the Eagles posted three runs in the fourth and three more in the seventh for the final margin of victory. Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.), Kristin Allain (Worcester, Mass.), Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.), Lisa Fischer (Coopersburg, Pa.), and Daly all added RBI singles for the final 7-1 margin.
In the second game, Boston College drew first blood in the opening inning when leadoff hitter Goodchild scored. In the third inning, BC added an insurance run when Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.) tripled and scored on a groundout. In the fourth, Daly doubled and scored on a subsequent wild pitch.
Boston College travels to Boston University Thursday for a single game beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Eagles will return to Shea Field this weekend, hosting Notre Dame (Saturday) and Syracuse (Sunday) in BIG EAST action.
