Softball Swept By Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State completed a three-game weekend sweep of the Boston College softball team, earning an 8-1 win over the Eagles this afternoon. The Sun Devils outscored BC 26-1 during the series.
Ninth-ranked ASU posted the first run of the game in the third inning off a Missy Hixon solo home run before the Eagles got on the scoreboard in the fourth. Jacqui Goodchild reached on leadoff double and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Lisa Field singled home Goodchild with a shot just over the third baseman's head and knotted the score at 1-1.
Arizona State scored two runs in the bottom of the frame, then added two more in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take the win.
Kristen Swetel pitched 4.2 innings, allowing one run on five hits for ASU. Erica Beach closed out the game in the final 2.1 innings surrendering one hit.
Kim Ryan started for the Eagles and pitched 4.2 inning. She allowed five runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking five. Tekae Malandris tossed the final 1.1 innings, giving up one hit and three unearned runs. She struck out three and walked one.
BC fell to 3-10 overall, while the Sun Devils moved to 19-4 on the season. BC will next play a two-game series at 2001 national champion Arizona on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 5 and 6.
