WALTHAM, Mass. - The Boston College women's lacrosse team rallied from a 8-3 deficit only to see their comeback bid fall short against eighth-ranked Syracuse University, on Friday evening at Bentley College. The Eagles fought fiercely against the highly-favored Orangewomen and against the blistering cold, but ended up on the short end of a 10-9 decision. Freshman attack Susie Breaznell set career-highs for both goals in a game (three) and points in a game (four) to lead the Eagles.
With the loss, BC drops to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST. Syracuse improves to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Syracuse came out the stronger of the two sides, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Leigh-Ann Zimmer and Jessica Trombley less than three minutes in. BC would respond, however, and would sustain a territorial edge for the next 10 minutes. Breaznell put the Eagles on the board at the 26:02 mark taking a pass from fellow freshman Carley St. Lucia on a free position shot and firing a shot high, over the shoulder of Syracuse goalkeeper Carla Gigon. BC would tie the score at 20:46 when senior co-captain Lauren Miller fed a pass to freshman Courtney Legath, who beat Gigon to the far post. The goal was Legath's ninth of the season. The Eagles would forge ahead only 41 seconds later and this time it was Miller doing the scoring, notching her team-leading 12th tally of the season to put BC up 3-2. The visitors from New York would settle down over the next 18 minutes, taking the momentum clearly away from BC by scoring the next five goals, including a back-breaking free position goal by Danielle Lillis as time expired in the half.
Lillis would give the Orangewomen their largest lead of the game just under 10 minutes into the second frame, on an unassisted tally, pushing the lead to 8-3. The goal would serve to light a fire under the Eagles, as the team would proceed to score the next three goals. Two tallies from Breaznell sandwiched around a goal from senior co-captain Chrissie DeMichele cut the Orange advantage to 8-6. Syracuse would score the next goal to increase their advantage to three, but BC was not about to be taken out of the match. Sophomore Meggie O'Neill's unassisted tally and St. Lucia's first goal of the match set the stage for a dramatic ending.
Trailing 9-8, Eagle defender Lauren Meyers won a critical draw control, but BC would squander the chance and moments later Syracuse would double its lead on a goal from Preseason All-American Carrie Soults with only 1:18 remaining. A Jacklyn Yovankin tally with 30 seconds remaining would cut the lead to one, but the Orangewomen were able to regain possession and run out the remainder of the clock.
The Eagles will next take the field at Fairfield University on Monday, Mar. 25. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
