CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Northeastern University snapped its 11-game losing streak with an extra-innings 4-3 victory over visiting Boston College Tuesday April 3 in Brookline. BC fell to 11-12-0 overall.
Ben Beck's only hit of the day produced the game-winning run for the Huskies. With one out in the 10th inning, Beck tripled to right center to drive home Coley O'Donnell, who singled off the eventual losing pitcher, Mark Sullivan.
BC squandered its chances in the half inning before when Ryan Leahy at third and Eric Wright at second remained idle as Brian Durkin grounded to third to end the inning.
The Eagles outhit Northeastern 12-5 and left just as many runners stranded on base (nine). The hosts scored once in the first inning and twice in the second off BC starter Jed Rogers for the 3-0 edge. Two passed balls, a wild pitch and Omar Pena's two-run double inflicted much harm to the Eagles' cause early on.
Chris Gannon relieved Rogers in the third to spur on an Eagle comeback. The senior southpaw threw 4.0 innings of hitless relief with a season-high seven strikeouts while BC put three runs on the board in the fourth. Brian Macchi, Jarett Mendoza and Jeff Mackor each had run-scoring singles in that frame but Macchi's 8-2 base-running out at the plate proved to be costly.
NU threatened in the eighth with Matt Lederhos on the mound. Lederhos loaded the bases on a single, walk and intentional walk only to close the door on a strikeout and groundout.
BC visits Brown on Thursday, April 5. The doubleheader begins at 2 p.m.
