CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Junior Brian Macchi (Milford, Mass.) homered twice in a 5-for-5 outing for nine total RBIs to lead Boston College past Brown 17-4 in the second game of a twinbill Thursday April 5 in Providence. The Bears edged BC 3-1 in the first game. The Eagles improved to 12-13-0 for the season.
Thursday marked the biggest Eagle RBI production since Macchi rang up seven RBIs (grand slam, two-run home run and sacrifice fly) at Georgetown April 29, 2000.
Boston College batters banged out a total of 16 hits off six Brown pitchers in the second game. Macchi was the main ringleader of the Eagle offensive attack, which slammed nine extra-base hits. Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.) went 2-for-3 with two doubles. Ryan Leahy (Salem, Mass.) and Matt Lederhos (Westwood, Mass.) each powered a double and a single.
Both Macchi and Lederhos drove in a pair of runs to help BC jump out to the 5-0 lead in the top of the first off Brown starter Frank Philbrick, who lasted only one inning. The Bears got a run back in their first at bat but the Eagles would score at least once in the next five of six innings to pull away.
Macchi's third appearance at the plate - in the third inning - was one wild pitch short of a grand slam. With the bases loaded, Josh DiScipio scored on the pitcher miscue that advanced the runners then Macchi went long to clear the bases for the 13-3 BC lead after 2.5 innings.
James Dawson, in his first career start, allowed three runs on six hits on the way to his first win of the season.
After giving up three runs in the first two innings, Matthew Duffey (San Antonio, Texas) shut Brown down for the remaining 4.0 innings but took the loss as BC totaled only three hits in the first game. Ryan Leahy hit the first of his two doubles on the day. Brian Macchi and Brian Durkin (Lowell, Mass.) accounted for the final two BC hits.
Jason Priede scattered three hits across six innings, fanning six batters and taking a no-hitter into the fifth to register the win. Jim Johnson retired three-straight BC batters to earn the save.
BC's only tally of the game came in the fifth inning. Leahy doubled in Brian Durkin who led off the inning with a single.
The Eagles travel to St. John's Saturday April 7. Game time is noon.
