CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.) had three home runs to lead Boston College to 11-2 and 6-4 victories over visiting Villanova (20-24-1, 7-15) Saturday in Chestnut Hill. The doubleheader sweep was BC's first in BIG EAST action this season, lifting its record to 22-20-0 overall and 6-11 in the league.
Mackor hit 5-for-6 (.833) on the day, with three home runs and five RBIs. His first of two home runs in the first contest knocked in the game-winning tally. The last time Mackor hit two round-trippers in one game was March 3, 1999 vs. the Milwaukee College of Engineering.
Jed Rogers (Westerly, R.I.) scattered eight hits in his complete-game effort (7.0). He struck out six, one shy of his career-high, and walked four on the way to his second victory of the year.
The Wildcats struck first on Nick Piantek's two-run home run in the first inning. But a RBI-double by Jarett Mendoza and two-run home run from Jeff Mackor for the 3-2 advantage in the second inning proved to be all that the Eagles would need in the first game. Matt Lederhos (Westwood, Mass.) powered his first collegiate home run in the Eagles' next opportunity, providing them with some breathing room at 4-2. A Wildcat error in the fourth inning served BC one more run. BC then collected six runs on six hits in the sixth. Brian Macchi hit his 14th home run of the year, and Jeff Mackor crushed his second long ball of the day while Mike Hubbard and Matt Lederhos doubled, and Ryan Leahy struck his first triple.
In a repeat performance of game one, Villanova grabbed an early lead, this time a 4-1 edge heading into the bottom of the fifth. BC climbed within one when, with a runner on base, Lederhos slammed his second home run of the afternoon. Back-to-back home runs by Jeff Mackor and Ryan Leahy gave BC its first lead of the game at 5-4 in the sixth. Mackor pushed across a run in the eighth to secure the victory.
Erik Olson (Reading, Mass.), who entered in the sixth inning, registered the win . He gave up only three hits and struck out five through 3.0 innings. Mark Sullivan (Winchester, Mass.) struck out three of the five batters that he faced in the ninth inning for his second save of the season.
BC hosts Villanova Sunday April 29 for the final game of the series. Game time is noon.
