CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Brian Macchi (Milford, Mass.) hit the game-winning single in the ninth after Jeff Mackor's (Salem, N.H.) eighth-inning, two-run home run tied it up as BC edged Villanova 8-7 Sunday April 29 in Chestnut Hill. The three-game sweep of the Wildcats lifted BC to 23-20-0 overall and 7-11-0 in the league.
Matthew Duffey (San Antonio, Texas) looped a single to right field off the eventual losing pitcher Dan Farino to lead off the bottom of the ninth. The sophomore shortstop moved up a base on pinch hitter Scott Lemone's (Benicia, Calif.) sacrifice bunt. The no. 3 hitter, Joe Kealty (Framingham, Mass.), was then intentionally walked to set the stage for Macchi's game-winning single.
After scoring a trio of runs in the first inning, BC fell behind 6-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth. The Eagles got two back on the strength of Kealty's home run to right field and three singles, including Jeff Mackor's run-scoring hit - off right-handed batters through the left side.
BC's hopes were dashed briefly when Mike Houser led off the eighth inning with a home run off BC reliever Matt Elfeldt, extending the Wildcat lead to two (7-5). But the Eagles were not done yet. Jeff Mackor plated his second and third RBIs on the day with his two-run dinger to left center, knotting the score at eight.
Mark Sullivan posted the win, his third of the season, after throwing a hitless ninth inning.
Brian Macchi went 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Other Eagle offensive leaders include: Joe Kealty, Brian Durkin, Jeff Mackor and Chris Rosado, who each contributed a pair of hits. Nick Piantek went 2-for-5 with two runs batted in to top Villanova.
BC meets Northeastern Tuesday May 1 at the Beanpot in Fenway Park. Game time is 11 a.m.
