CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Boston College advanced to the 12th Annual Beanpot Championship Game Wednesday, May 2 with its 12-1 victory over Northeastern Tuesday at Fenway Park. It was BC's fifth-consecutive victory, which lifted its record to 24-20-0.
Thirteen Eagle position players saw action with all nine starters notching at least one hit. Six BC pitchers limited the Huskies to one run on seven hits in 9.0 innings, stranding 11 runners. Brian Durkin (Lowell, Mass.) paced the Eagles' 15-hit attack with three singles. Ryan Leahy (Salem, Mass.), Joe Kealty (Framingham, Mass.) and Matthew Duffey (San Antonio, Texas) each contributed a pair of hits.
The Eagles jumped out to the 3-0 lead after one when Leahy scored on Joe Kealty's single through the right side. Consecutive singles by Durkin and Jarett Mendoza loaded the bases for Jeff Mackor, who continued his hot hitting streak with a two-run double off the Green Monster, two feet shy of a home run.
Northeastern pulled within two when Beck sent Erik Olson's first offering of the second inning over the left field wall netting. In the next half inning, Matt Duffey led off with a single and moved up on a botched pickoff play for a stolen base. The shortstop came home on Ryan Leahy's triple. Lederhos then stroked his first sacrifice fly of the season to score a run.
After Chris Rosado and Duffey each singled and moved up on Leahy's sacrifice bunt, Lederhos knocked them in on a miscue by the Northeastern third baseman. Kealty plated his second run of the day with a single, providing BC with the 8-1 advantage at the end of six.
The Eagles scored four times in the seventh thanks to two hits, Kealty's sacrifice fly, three walks and two hit batsmen.
Ben Beck was the only Husky with two hits in the game.
Erik Olson left after two innings, allowing two hits and one run with two strikeouts on the way to his fifth victory (5-1). NU's Jason Gillespie allowed 12 hits in 6.0 innings with four strikeouts.
