CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - After winning its first game in five years over Rutgers (32-12) yesterday, Boston College fell 4-2 to the host Scarlet Knights on Sunday, April 22 in Piscataway, N.J. The loss evened BC's overall mark to 19-19-0 with a 4-11-0 record in the BIG EAST.
The game was scoreless through 4.5 innings until Rutgers erupted with four runs on five hits to mount a staggering 4-0 lead. Matt Wolski sparked the Scarlet Knight fifth-inning barrage with his two-out RBI single that drove in Brian Ciemniecki. The next batter, Val Majewski, ripped a two-run home run to left field. The rally didn't end there as two singles and a walk loaded the bases before Ryan Lillis was issued a free pass to push across one more Scarlet Knight run.
BC put up a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Jarett Mendoza (North Dighton, Mass.) struck a two-out, two-run single that sent the Rutgers' starting pitcher - and game-winner -, Tom Crohan, to the bench. That was one of eight hits he allowed in his 5.2-inning stint.
The Eagles squandered chances throughout the game, placing the leadoff batter on base in five of nine innings. They matched Rutgers' nine hits in the game. Defense early in the contest kept the two teams close. Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.) threw out three consecutive Rutgers runners in stolen base attempts in the first four innings. In the second inning alone, two of the three outs were putouts at the plate, protecting the scoreless tie.
Four Eagle batters contributed a pair of hits including Joe Kealty, Jarett Mendoza, Brian Durkin and Mike Hubbard. Matt Lederhos (Westwood, Mass.) took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings.
BC hosts Northeastern University Tuesday, April 24. Game time is 3 p.m.
