CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - The Eagles (1-5) split a doubleheader with host William and Mary (8-3) Saturday, Feb. 24 in Williamsburg, Va. BC shutout the Tribe 2-0 in the first game then succumbed to a 5-2 loss in the second contest of the doublebill. The two teams play Sunday at 12 noon in the final meeting.
Junior Paul Knapic (Bayside, N.Y.) recorded his first win of the year, surrendering only three hits in 8.0 innings. The junior right-hander struck out seven batters before yielding to sophomore reliever Matt Elfeldt (Delmar, N.Y.) in the ninth, who earned his first save of the season.
The Eagles took the 1-0 lead in the third inning on the strength of Ryan Leahy's (Salem, Mass.) double to center field that plated Neal McCarthy (Warwick, R.I.), who had reached on a fielder's choice. The Tribe put the lead-off hitter on in the 5th, 6th and 8th innings but could not convert, stranding five men in those frames. Knapic got out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the fifth with a called-three strikeout and forced fly to center.
BC's insurance run came in the eighth inning when Chris Rosado (Stamford, Conn.), who led off with a double, scored on a Tribe miscue. Rosado went 2-for-3 in the game.
Whitt Farr earned the loss on the mound, after retiring five of the first six batters he faced in the afternoon via strikeouts. He went on the collect nine K's on the day.
BC outhit the hosts 10-8 in game two, but William and Mary's four runs with two outs in the seventh inning sealed the deal for its eighth win of the season.
Chris Gannon (Arlington, Mass.) threw 6.2 innings, allowing only five hits while striking out three. He was responsible for four runs before yielding to junior reliever Mark Sullivan (Winchester, Mass.), who gave up three hits and struck out three.
Brian Macchi (Milford, Mass.) went 3-for-4, and both Jarett Mendoza (North Dighton, Mass.) and Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.) each picked up a pair of hits. Macchi's single up the middle knotted the game at one in the top of the 7th. The Eagles would not cross the plate again until the ninth when Mackor ground out to score Mendoza for the final 5-2 tally.
Ben Shepard earned his second win of the season for William and Mary.
