South Orange, N.J. - Boston College went into a tough doubleheader at Seton Hall and emerged with a hard-earned split, winning the opener, 2-1, before falling by the same score in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Eagles (9-14, 2-2 BIG EAST) scored two runs in the top of the third inning and held on for the win. Freshman Cara Blumfield reached on an error, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on another error to get BC on the board. Anne Marie Ambros then singled and advanced to second on an error. A single by Jennifer Asbury moved Ambros to third, and another Seton Hall error brought her home with what proved to be the winning run.
Freshman pitcher Kimberly Ryan took care of the rest, giving up just three hits and one walk while striking out a career-high 15 batters in seven innings.
The Pirates gained a measure of revenge in the nightcap with a 2-1 win of their own, scoring in the bottom of the sixth after the Eagles had rallied to tie the game in the top of the inning.
Blumfield tripled to lead off the BC sixth and came home on an Asbury double to make it a 1-1 game, but three straight singles by the Pirates in the bottom of the frame plated the decisive run.
Ryan (5-7) took the loss despite striking out 12 and surrendering just six hits. The Eagles managed just two hits against Pirate hurler Misty Beaver.
Boston College will return to action on Wednesday with a doubleheader at Brown. The Eagles will host Harvard in a twinbill on Thursday before the conference slate resumes with a doubleheader against Notre Dame on Saturday.
