Baseball Falls To Boston Red Sox, 8-3

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Despite a 1-0 lead after two innings, Boston College fell 8-3 to the major-league Boston Red Sox squad Friday in Fort Myers, Fla.
Co-captain Andy Sullivan (Winchester, Mass.) started the game on the mound for the Eagles. The senior shut down the BoSox, striking out both Mike Stanley and Jose Offerman. Other Eagle highlights included a solo home run in the seventh by junior Chris Rosado (Stamford, Conn.). Mike Gambino (Garrison, N.Y.) went 2-for-3, and Mike Quirk (Paxton, Mass.) also picked up a pair of hits.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead when Neal McCarthy (Warwick, R.I.) singled through the middle. After stealing second, he scored on a double by Brian Durkin (Lowell, Mass.).
The Red Sox staged a comeback in the third. Manny Alexander hit a two-out double off BC pitcher Erik Olson (Reading, Mass.) and scored on a throwing error, which allowed Coleman to advance to third. Hatteberg walked then Marty Cordova singled to score Coleman and grant the hosts a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Andy Sheets tripled off of Chris Gannon (Arlington, Mass.) and scored on an error. Cordova's RBI double capped a four-run inning by the Red Sox to extend their lead to 6-1.
BC climbed back with a lead-off double by Quirk in the sixth. After moving to third on a passed ball, Quirk scored on a double by Aaron Sabo (Bell Canyon, Calif.). The Eagles trimmed the lead further in the seventh when Chris Rosado smashed a bullet off the scoreboard in left center to cut the Red Sox' lead to 6-3 before "The Stretch."
The Red Sox added two in bottom half of the inning for the final 8-3 tally.
