FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Boston College swept two games against the University of Buffalo in Fort Myers, Fla. Saturday (March 4). The Eagles won the first game 18-0 on the strength of 19 hits and stellar pitching efforts from Brendan Nolan (Swampscott, Mass.) and Matt Elfeldt (Delmar, N.Y.). In the nightcap, Steve Langone (Reading, Mass.) struck out 12 to lead BC to a 3-2 win. The Eagles are currently 4-2 and play Valparaiso Monday (March 6) and Tuesday (March 7). Both games begin at 3:30 p.m.
Both Mike Quirk (Paxton, Mass.) and Neal McCarthy (Warwick, R.I.) had three hits in the first game. Quirk doubled twice and drove in four runs. Mike Gambino (Garrison, N.Y.) and Joe Kealty (Framingham, Mass.) gave 2-for-3 performances. Kealty also hit the lone home run of the game.
BC's 11-0 lead after five innings was not enough as the Eagles ripped off seven more runs in the top of the sixth. Nolan and Elfeldt allowed only two hits all day. Elfeldt struck out five of the eight batters he faced in his two innings of work.
In his second complete game of the season, Langone allowed two runs on six hits while striking out 12 with only one walk in seven innings. Five Eagles singled and three BC players received two walks each in the nightcap. Buffalo led 2-1 through five innings until the Eagles knocked in one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Neither team committed an error in that game.
