Boston College junior Sean McGowan (Burlington, Mass./Burlington HS) and sophomore Steve Langone (Reading, Mass./Reading HS) earned 1998 American Baseball Coaches Association All-Northeast Division I first team baseball honors, while junior Jeff Waldron (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Classical) captured All-Northeast second team accolades.
The two first-team selections -- McGowan and Langone -- advance to the ABCA/Rawlings All-America ballot. The All-America teams will be announced later this week at the College World Series.
Boston College and St. Johns (N.Y.) University were the only two schools to place three players on the region's two all-star teams.
A first baseman, McGowan was Boston College's top hitter, finishing with a .432 batting average (63-for-146) in 39 games. His batting average currently ranks him 14th nationally. McGowan also led the Eagles with 16 home runs, three triples, 55 RBIs, 49 runs scored and 129 total bases. The junior, who was also an All-ECAC first team choice, registered two or more hits in 22 games, including three four-hit contests. He had 18 multiple-RBI games. On the mound, McGowan made six relief appearances, totalling 5.0 innings.
McGowan's 63 hits rank as the second-highest single-season total in Boston College baseball history.
Langone, the designated hitter, finished his sophomore campaign with a .401 batting average (57-for-142). He was the only BC team member to play in -- and start -- all 41 games. Langone finished second on the team (behind McGowan) with 57 hits, nine home runs, 36 RBIs, 99 total bases and 41 runs scored. The sophomore also had a 4-5 pitching record in 10 starts. He threw a team-high six complete games.
A catcher, Waldron finished the 1998 season with a .340 batting average (49-for-11) in 39 games. He had 13 doubles and seven home runs. He ranked third on the team in hits and total bases (83), and fourth in RBIs (33).
All three players played in the 1998 New England College All-Star Game at Dodd Stadium (Norwich, Conn.) on Monday, June 1. Langone had two hits in three plate appearances.
