Joe Van Allen enters his second season as Director of Rehabilitation for the Boston College Football program. He has over 25 years of sports medicine and rehabilitation experience, and was on staff with the New England Patriots from 2001 to 2019 as an Assistant Athletic Trainer and eventually as the Director of Rehabilitation.
Van Allen was on the Patriots' staff for all six Super Bowl titles during his time in Foxborough. After 18 years leading the athletic training staff for New England, he left in 2019 to become the Director of the Boston Sports Performance Center in Wellesley.
Prior to his arrival in New England, he spent four years working in various positions as an Athletic Trainer, including a stint as a sports physical therapy consultant for Virginia Tech.
Van Allen has published numerous professional presentations, primarily based on his experience working with NFL players. He currently holds certifications as a certified sports clinical specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties, a licensed physical therapist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, certified athletic trainer by the National Athletic Trainers' Association and certified strength and conditioning specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Additionally, Van Allen has been recognized for his work in the field with various honors, including the 2017 Athletic Trainer of the Year from Athletic Trainers of Massachusetts. That same year, he was honored by the Professional Football Athletic Trainers' Society with the Tim Davey AFC Assistant Athletic Trainer of the Year Award. Van Allen and the Patriots staff were also recognized by the PFATS with the 2016 Ed Block Athletic Training Staff of the Year.
A 1994 graduate of Millikin University in Illinois, Van Allen earned a bachelor's of science in biology. He later completed a master's of science in physical therapy from the University of Miami.
