A.J. Colarusso and Cesar Gonzalez combine to keep Cavaliers at bay
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College Baseball (19-8, 7-3 ACC) defeated ninth-ranked Virginia (21-6, 6-3 ACC) in the first of three games on Friday afternoon, 5-3
A.J. Colarusso started for the Eagles and went six innings while throwing a career high 113 pitches. Colarusso struck out six while allowing just one unearned run. He was replaced by Cesar Gonzalez, who threw three innings to close out the game and earn his first save of the season.Â
Boston College got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning when Carter Hendrickson led off the inning with an infield single. Luke Gallo then laid down a sacrifice bunt, which advanced Hendrickson to second. Kyle Wolff then launched his first home run of the season, 371 feet to left field, that would make it 2-0.Â
Virginia would get a run back in the top of the fourth when a single up the middle would score a runner from second. Colarusso escaped a first and third jam with his sixth strikeout of the game to get Boston College out of the fourth inning.Â
The Eagles would make it 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth when Jack Toomey stole third and, on an overthrow by the catcher, scored to extend the lead.Â
Boston College would add two more runs in the seventh and push their lead to 5-1. The first run came after Gunnar Johnson walked to lead off the inning, and he advanced to second on a bunt from Colin Larson before stealing third. He was then brought in to score off a single from Julio Solier. Solier then scored to make it 5-1 when Nick Wang doubled to left field.Â
The Cavaliers would get two runs in the top of the ninth to make the deficit smaller. Both runs came with two outs, as a walk was followed by back-to-back doubles that put Virginia in a dangerous position. Gonzalez closed the game out when he induced a groundout to Solier, who threw the runner out at first to end the game.Â
Up Next: The Eagles will return to action tomorrow for the second game of their series with the Cavaliers with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
