Eagles Set to Host No. 9 Virginia

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College Baseball will host ninth ranked Virginia in their second straight home ACC series. The Eagles and Cavaliers will meet from March 27th to the 29th with game times scheduled for 3 p.m., 2 p.m. and 1 p.m. All three games will be streamed live on ACCNX.
Record vs Virginia
Boston College is 11-30 all-time against Virginia with a 5-11 record at home. The Eagles went 3-1 against the Cavaliers last year, including two of three in Charlottesville. Their last meeting came in the ACC tournament when Boston College won 12-8. The Eagles were led offensively that day by three RBI from Jack Toomey and three hits from Adam Magpoc. On the mound, Kyle Kipp earned the win while Cesar Gonzalez went three scoreless to close out the victory.Â
Scouting the Cavaliers
Virginia is 21-5 this season and ranked ninth in the national polls. The Cavaliers come into the weekend off the backs of a 16-6 win over Maryland during the midweek and winning two of three at home to Wake Forest over the weekend. Virginia's offense is paced by AJ Gracia, Harrison Didawick, Sam Harris, and Eric Becker, who are all hitting over .350 this season, with Gracia the leader at .368. Harris and Becker led the Cavaliers in RBI with 31 each, while Gracia and Harris are the home run leaders at eight. On the mound, Virginia has four pitchers who have worked over 25 innings this year. Lucas Hartman and Tyler Kapa have the two lowest ERAs on the staff, while Henry Zatkowski leads the Cavaliers in strikeouts with 37.Â
The Matchups
On Friday, A.J. Colarusso and Kyle Johnson will face off in the first game of the series. Colarusso comes into the matchup 1-1 on the year with a 4.08 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 28.2 innings of work. In his last outing, he recorded his second straight start of six innings and gave up two earned runs while striking out a pair. Johnson made his season debut in his last start and went an inning while striking out two.Â
Saturday will feature Tyler Mudd against Max Stammel. Mudd is 1-2 on the year with a 4.88 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 24 innings of work. He went three innings in his last start, giving up two earned runs and striking out a pair. Stammel is 2-1 this season in 25.1 innings of work with a 4.97 ERA and 22 strikeouts. In his last outing, he threw 2.2 innings and gave up three earned runs while striking out four.Â
On Sunday, Brady Miller and John Paone will face off in the finale. Miller has yet to receive a decision in four starts this year, but has 16 strikeouts in 15 innings of work. In his last start, Miller went a season high six innings while striking out a career high seven batters. Paone is 1-1 this season with 24 innings of work and 23 strikeouts. In his last start, he went 3.1 innings and allowed four earned runs while striking out one.
Last Time Out
Boston College swept both its midweek matchups, defeating Northeastern, 3-2, and Merrimack, 12-2. The Merrimack win gives the Eagles their second third-run-rule victory of the year and marks the sixth time that they have scored 10 or more runs this year. Against Northeastern, the Boston College staff had a season-high 16 strikeouts, including six from Luke D'Ancona, who came on in relief and threw 3.2 scoreless innings without allowing a hit. On Wednesday, the offense started slowly before scoring nine runs in the sixth and seventh innings to close the game out. Colin Larson put together his second four-RBI game of the season, while Ty Mainolfi had three RBI. Five Eagles had multiple hits, along with a season high of five batters being hit by pitches. Chase Hartsell earned his second win of the season as he closed out the game with 1.2 scoreless innings of work.Â
