Eagles Explode Late in Win Over Merrimack

Four RBI afternoon from Larson leads the way
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College Baseball (18-8, 6-3 ACC) defeated Merrimack (10-11, 5-4 MAAC) in a midweek contest on Wednesday afternoon, 12-2.Â
Drew Grumbles started for the Eagles and went four scoreless innings with five strikeouts. John D Mitchell came on in relief of Grumbles and threw an inning and a third, giving up two earned runs with a strikeout. Chase Hartsell finished the game out with 1.2 innings of scoreless work and a strikeout as well.
Boston College struck first in the bottom of the third when Carter Hendrickson was hit by the first pitch he faced. Jace Roossien advanced Hendrickson to second on a sacrifice bunt. Hendrickson then stole third before he was brought in on a groundout by Colin Larson to make it 1-0.Â
The Warriors got a run back in the top of the fifth when they put runners on first and third with one out. They were able to bring the runner in from third on a single to center field to tie it at one all.Â
The Eagles got two back in the bottom of the fifth with both coming with two outs. A pitch hit Larson, and then Juilo Solier singled up the middle to make it first and third for Ty Mainolfi. Mainolfi then lined a double to the right field wall, which would score both Larson and Solier.Â
Merrimack would make it 3-2 in the top of the sixth when they put runners on first and third after a leadoff double and walk. On a sacrifice fly to right field, the runner would score from third.Â
Boston College would respond in the bottom of the sixth with five runs of their own. The Eagles would load the bases through a walk from Luke Gallo and singles from Roossien and Hendrickson to bring up Larson. Larson then launched a double to the right field wall to make it 5-2 and score Gallo and Hendrickson. Solier would then hit a sac fly to left center to score Roossien from third. Larson would make it 7-2 on a wild pitch that went to the backstop. Nick Wang capped off the scoring for the sixth when he launched a 399-foot home run to left field to make it 8-2.Â
Boston College would finish the game off in the bottom of the seventh, when they plated four more runs to earn their third run-rule victory of the season. For the second straight inning, the Eagles would load the bases via a leadoff double from Gallo, a single from Hendrickson, and a walk from Gunnar Johnson. Larson would knock a single into center to score Gallo for his fourth RBI of the afternoon and make it 9-2. In the next at-bat, Solier would single up the middle again to score Hendrickson and keep the bases loaded. Mainolfi would plate the 11th run of the game when he earned a bases-loaded walk to score Johnson. Wang would end the game five pitches later with a single to left field to score Larson from third.Â
Up Next: The Eagles will return to action on Friday when they host ninth-ranked Virginia for a weekend series with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
