Wolff with the Walkoff in the 11th inning
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College Baseball (16-8, 6-3 ACC) defeated Cal (13-11, 0-6 ACC) in the finale of their weekend series, 3-2.
Brady Miller started for the Eagles and went six innings with a career high seven strikeouts while giving up just two runs, neither of which was earned. He was relieved by Chase Hartsell, who pitched two scoreless innings without allowing a hit and striking out one. John Kwiatkowski came on for the final three innings and allowed three hits without allowing a run to earn his third win of the season.
The Golden Bears scored first for the third straight game in the series with a sacrifice fly to deep center field that brought in a runner from third.
Boston College tied the game in the bottom half of the second when Danny Surowiec led off the inning with a single. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Luke Gallo before Cesar Gonzalez looped a single into left field to score Surowiec from second.
The Eagles would make it 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Gallo led off the inning with a single before advancing to third off a sacrifice bunt from Carter Hendrickson and a fly out to center field from Gonzalez. Gallo would then score from third when Colin Larson lined a single to center field.
Cal would tie the game at two in the top of the sixth inning when a two-out single was lined up the middle to bring in a runner from second.
In the top of the eighth, the Golden Bears put a runner on third with one out, and Boston College was able to escape with a flyout to left field that allowed Nick Wang to throw out the runner, who tried to advance to home.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Eagles had runners on second and third for Ty Mainolfi, but he flew out to right field, and then Larson was thrown out trying to take home to force extra innings.
Kwiatkowski worked out of jams in the 10th and 11th innings to set up Boston College's chance to win in the bottom of the 11th.
In the bottom of the 11th, after a leadoff walk and then a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt, the Eagles had runners on first and third and no outs for Kyle Wolff. Wolff then hit a ball to left field that the Cal outfielder dropped, which allowed Owen DeShazo to score from third to secure the walkoff victory for Boston College.
Up Next: The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Northeastern with a first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
