Eagles Defeat Sacred Heart in Home Opener

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College Baseball (12-8, 3-3 ACC) defeated Sacred Heart (4-13, 3-3 MAAC), 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.
Drew Grumbles started for the Eagles and went two innings, allowing just one run and one hit while striking out two. John D Mitchell came on in relief and threw three scoreless innings and matched his career high in strikeouts with six. Sean Hard pitched the sixth inning and gave up one earned run while striking out three. John Kwiatkowski pitched two innings of relief, giving up two earned runs. Tyler Mudd closed the game out as he induced three fly outs to secure his first save of the season.
The Pioneers got on the board in the top of the first when they led off with a double, and the runner advanced on a wild pitch. After Grumbles struck out the next batter, the runner would score on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Boston College tied the game up in the bottom of the first. The Eagles would load the bases up for Luke Gallo, who was hit by a pitch to score Ty Mainolfi from third.
The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the second when Mainolfi lined a single to right field to score Colin Larson from second.
Mainolfi made it 3-1 for the Eagles in the bottom of the fourth with his third hit of the afternoon, which scored Larson from second once again.
Sacred Heart would get one run back in the top of the sixth, when they hit a solo shot to left field to make it 3-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Boston College added two runs. The first came when Gallo singled to center to bring in Jack Toomey from third. After a pitch hit Esteban Garcia, Larson took a walk that would bring in Gallo and make it 5-2 Eagles.
In the top of the eighth, the Pioneers got two runs back when they hit a 433-foot home run to left center field.
The Eagles went quickly in the bottom of the eighth before Mudd came in and closed out the ninth as he worked around walking his first batter.
Up Next: The Eagles will return to action tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. when they take on UMass Lowell.
