Birdball Dominates Cornell to Begin Weekend

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Boston College Baseball (3-1) defeated Cornell (0-2) on the first night of the Hub City Invitational, 9-1.

A.J. Colarusso got his second start of the season and threw five innings with seven strikeouts as he picked up his first win of the season.

The Eagles got to scoring right away as Julio Solier opened the game with a leadoff double before taking third on a passed ball. Nick Wang then grounded out to short, which brought in Solier.

In the second, Owen DeShazo made it 2-0 when he knocked a ball into shallow left field that scored Ben Williams, who had led off the inning with a walk.

In the third, Boston College tacked on a third run when Kyle Wolff singled to center, which brought Jack Toomey home.

The Eagles went quietly in the fourth before getting another thanks to timely baserunning and three Cornell errors. Ty Mainolfi led the inning off with a walk before moving to third on two failed pickoff attempts by Cornell. Mainolfi crossed home on a successful bunt by Kyle Wolff.

Boston College tacked on two runs in the sixth via a sac fly by Wang, followed by a single by Mainolfi, as Sean Martinez and Solier scored to make it 6-1.

The Eagles then added another in the eighth when Mainolfi reached on a fielder's choice to bring in Solier, making it 7-1.

In the top of the ninth, Boston College made it 9-1 when Gunnar Johnson brought in Wolff on a double down the right field line. Sean Martinez drove in the game's final run with a single to left that brought in Johnson.

Up Next: The Eagles will return to action tomorrow in Spartanburg, SC when they take on Northwestern at 4:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Park.
